What could be the best anniversary gift for hubby?

Our 1st wedding anniversary is gonna be next month already. Wow, time flies! I actually haven't decided yet what to give hubby on our anniversary. I'm excited because it's gonna be my first chance to buy him something fancy out of my own pocket, hehe. Last Christmas, we did exchange gifts but he gave me money to buy him gifts from his wishlist. So on our anniversary, I've been really wanting to give him something memorable and special suited for this wonderful event of our lives. I tried looking online for gift ideas but so far, nothing special jumps out of me yet. I was wondering if you guys know of any 1st wedding anniversary gift ideas. What did you give your hubbies on your anniversary? I welcome suggestions, please.

Countdown to Christmas

I was blogging and EC dropping while watching tv when I heard Mel Tiangco ended her news program with a countdown to Christmas. I didn't realize until after I heard from her that it's actually only 85 days more to go before Christmas. Well, there's still a little over two months from now but part of our culture is to kinda feel the spirit of Christmas by playing Christmas songs in the shopping malls and doing countdowns in tv shows as early as the month of September. Oh boy, how I miss Pinas especially during this season!

Foggy Morning

Our mornings here in Arkansas is starting to get chilly and foggy. I can already feel Autumn ready to visit the country once again. It still does get warm in the afternoon but it wasn't as bad as it was at the peak of the summer season. I must say I love Autumn because of the effect that it brings to the color of the trees around us. But of course when Autumn comes, Winter will follow next which is not really my favorite time of the year. I don't like really cold cold weather. Probably because I came from a tropical country, I welcome some level of cold but when it goes down as low as 60-65 degrees, brrrr, that ain't fun!

Tired but I'm still blogging...

I'm actually now reaping the benefits of having a PR. Thirty minutes before I left from work, I checked PPP and saw 7 green and 2 white opportunities for me. I readily grabbed the $15.00 opps. As of this writing, 7 opps requiring a PR 1 are still available for me but I didn't find the interest to blog about them. I'm overwhelm with the blessings but I still choose which topics to blog about. Some topics are complicated, controversial and some are redundant, so I choose to stay away from those topics. But I am so grateful to Google once more for giving me a PR. I'm starting to feel tired now so I must get on with blogging and EC dropping. Ciao!

Melts in your mouth, Not in your hands

That is the famous M & M trademark. And it's quite true. I was worried a lil bit last night that I might have chocolate stains in my fingers while I was using my laptop but true to it's slogan, it literally just melts in my mouth but not in my hand. Obviously, I was blogging and munching on a bowl of M&M peanuts and chocolates last night. Jeff grabbed two small packs of M&M yesterday while we were at Walmart doing our grocery shopping. Usually, we would buy Hershey's dark chocolates with almonds 'coz we both are crazy with dark chocolates but I don't know what came to our minds yesterday when we grabbed 2 packs of these candies. Apparently, it's yummy and before we knew it, the bowl was almost half empty after an hour. Yikes!

Translate your thoughts

As we all know it, the internet is an effective tool in learning nowadays. Back in highschool when there was not yet any internet access, the books in the library are our only resources. Today’s generation is lucky because not only do they have books to aid them in their learning but the easy access to the internet makes their life much easier. Learning is just one click of a button so to speak. I have exciting news to share to all of you. This is the birth of WikiTranslate, a site that brings the collaborative power of a community of users to the art of language translation. You will learn different ways of saying things in another language as easy as 1,2,3. Take the time to check out this new addition in the world of internet education.

Below is the site's press release.

WikiTranslate - Collaborative Language Translation Despite years of research into automatic language translation, even world-class software fails to capture the grammatical peculiarities and idioms of human language. While Google Translate and Babelfish can give a rough approximation of a translation, only humans can consistently and accurately translate from one language to another. WikiTranslate allows users to input text to be translated to and from English, Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish (with more languages to come). The text is first run through the Google translation algorithm that provides a rough translation. This rough translation is then presented to the WikiTranslate user community to tweak, wiki-style, into a complete and correct translation of the original text.

Vina Morales, Pregnant?!?

Well, I didn't believe it until I saw her interview with Christy Fermin on The Buzz this afternoon. Celebrities getting pregnant even before they got married is not something new but it still did surprise me now that it happens to Vina Morales. I haven't heard that she ever got married at the age of 32 and she's also not very vocal about her non-showbiz boyfriend, Cedric Lee so it came as a shock when I first learned about it. She confirmed that she's 2 months pregnant and that they consider it a blessing. Goodluck to her and hope she'll have a healthy pregnancy.

Life is Good

We missed two Sundays in a row at church and it just feels great to be back in our Sunday school and service this morning. The sermon was great and it was good to see the Pastor who officiated our wedding last year in the same church. He had to quit being a pastor 'coz he's stricken with cancer. Seeing him today at church brought back vivid memories of my wedding in October of last year. Time flies, don't it? We don't have plans yet on how to celebrate our Paper Anniversary but knowing Jeff, I'm sure he has some memorable surprises in stored for that special event of our lives.

I can't believe it's going to be Monday again tomorrow. Haay! I always have Monday-itis at work. Well, who doesn't? It's always a double drag to get up for work on a Monday. But what can we do, that's life, we have to work and do something with our lives. Anyway, I can't get myself to get away from my laptop on weekends. Actually, I'm multi-tasking. Filipinos are so good with that. I am blogging, washing some clothes and watching ASAP and SOP interchangeably. I love both shows. GMA Pinoy TV and TFC both rocks. I didn't regret at all that we subscribed to both channels last year. It was so worth it. It brings me closer to home.

Weekend blessings and more

It's past our usual bedtime but me and hubby are still up. I'm right here in front of my laptop doing my EC dropping and watching Startalk at the same time while Jeff is in the next room playing a computer game. Yeah, we're self-confessed computer addicts. But we still find time to spend quality time together. As a matter of fact, 3 hours ago, we went to Walmart to buy some grocery stuff that we can send in a Balikbayan box to my family in the Philippines this Christmas. It was fun 'coz I love to shop even if it's not really for myself. And we always enjoyed our time together inside and outside the house. We're both working for the weekdays so we always try to make the most out of our weekends.

On a different note, I got some good news from my very good friend in Massachusetts,
Lou. She left a message on the answering machine letting me know that my blog, My Sweet Haven now have a Google Page Rank of 1. Wow! I'm happy and thankful to Google that after 7 months of blogging, they finally gave me a rank. Though honestly, I am not sure how will this affect my blogging opportunities but I'm grateful for the small recognition. Also, another gift from blogging is from a very good blogger that I always take time to visit and read, MamaFlo's Place. She sent me 25 worth of EC credits for advertising on her blog. I appreciate that a lot.

My Missing Bowl

Two days ago, I brought my own bowl to work for my Campbell's Chunky soup that I'd eat sometimes for lunch. I thought of leaving it in the breakroom so I don't have to bring it back with me everyday. But to my dismay, I couldn't find my olive green bowl today. I brought soup and sandwich for lunch today but apparently I couldn't eat it in the breakroom 'coz I don't have a bowl to microwave my soup with. Most of the stuff there are disposable styrofoams which obviously are not microwaveable. And I didn't want to use just any of the glass bowls there 'coz I didn't know who owns it and I think it's gonna be embarrassing if I'd use them without permission. So instead of just staying at work for lunch, I end up driving home anyway. Whoever used my bowl, I just wish she'll return it so I'll also have the chance to use it. Hehehe...

Bad Day

I could always remember Daniel Powter's Bad Day song whenever I had one myself. As early as 9:30 a.m., I knew right then, that today is not going to be a good day to be JENN. Have you ever had those moments? When you just feel like something doesn't seem right and luck seems to be in a very far corner. Well, I feel like that today. I got most of the weirdest computer problem calls today. I hated it 'coz it takes a lot of time to fix and for this month I'm leading the race as far as number of calls solved are concerned and I'd want to maintain that but today's calls were not helping me. To make matters worse, at the end of the day, on my way home from work, I witnessed an accident involving a truck driven by a very old guy and another truck driven by a guy in his early twenties. It was nothing major though, just a little dent on the old guy's truck but nobody was hurt, thank God! I was just shocked 'coz it happened right in front of me as I was waiting for my turn at a STOP sign. Well, I really had a BAD DAY, don't you think?

Home Sweet Home

This is where I used to live back in the Philippines. I saw these photos in my cousin's Multiply page and I couldn't help but reminisce the times when I was still back home. I thought about sharing a bit about my home for 3 years in Linao, Minglanilla. My favorite part of the house is the photo nook right behind the staircase. That corner is just full of memories. It contains photos of course of each member of the family. Not to mention the computer is set up right there in that corner which reminds me a lot of my chat moments with Jeff when I was still in the Philippines.

The second photo is the bedroom that I used to share with my dearest sister, Jhazel. She's the cute lil girl that didn't do the "peace sign" in the group photo. By the way, the other girls in that photo are her friends. And yeah, I used to sleep on the upper part of that bunk bed. I miss my bed and I miss my family back home.

My Stinky Little Friends

It's been a while since I last ate dried fish. Not that it's one of my favorite foods back home, but when you live in the U.S., every once in a while you miss eating foods that you rarely find in the grocery stores. We live 45 minutes away from an Asian food market, but they don't sell "danggit" and "galunggong" anyway so I really crave for dried fish sometimes. Thanks to my dear sister in Illinois, while she was in a Filipino store last week, she bought me a few packs of dried fish and pusit. It arrived in our mailbox yesterday and I didn't wait long before I cook it.

I don't know about your hubbies but my Jeff isn't wild about the smell of my "stinky little friends." That's how he calls them, hehehe. We agreed that I can cook them outside through the side burner of our grill but he was taking a nap this afternoon and I didn't want to wake him up just to prepare the grill outside so I took the liberty to cook it inside. As you can imagine, it was a HUGE mistake! The smell wake him up. Ooops! Soweee!!! He opened all 6 windows in the house and we didn't eat dinner together 'coz he chose to stay in the next room 'coz of the smell. Huhuhu! He said he still love me of course, he just hates the smell of my stinky little friends. I dare him to kiss me on the lips while I was eating just to prove that he still does love me, thank God, he did kiss me but with nose shut, hahahaha!

Thoughts on a Fine Friday

Another week is over. Work went pretty fast and easy. There's not much trouble with our banking systems this week so we have a lot of downtime in the afternoon. We usually spent it chit chatting and net surfing. Of course, we have internet restrictions so I never dare do my blogging nor my EC dropping at work, hehehe. Anyway, I feel like a tick right now ready to burst from too much pizza. We went to Pizza Hut for dinner. We tried to eat out at least twice a week, just to get out of the house, treat ourselves and do things together. I know it's not healthy to do it like that, not to mention, it can be pretty expensive to eat out every night, so we had to cut back from eating on restaurants on weeknights.

On a different note, after 3 nights, I was able to finish watching "The Promise", a timeless love story of two young hearts that blossomed into an undying love. This movie which starred Angel Locsin and Richard Gutierrez was shown on Philippine cinema as GMA Films' 2007 Valentine's Offering. I would recommend this movie to everyone who likes to watch Tagalog films. There's nothing corny about this movie. Both the lead characters were so good in their acting and the plot can be considered a masterpiece in it's own right. Check out S1kat's Multiply if you're interested to watch this movie along with other good tagalog movies that you missed watching in theatres.

How long do you think you'll live?

Have you ever wondered about that? Honestly, I don't. But when I read the news article today about Tomoji Tanabe in Japan, who was said to be the oldest man in the world, and is actually celebrating his 113rd birthday, it just amazed me and made me wonder if it's even possible to live that long. I mean many people from a couple of centuries ago probably live longer but in our generation, with all the food that we eat and the lifestyle that we are exposed with, I've always thought that it's almost impossible for us to reach 100 years old. I wouldn't even want to live that long anyway. I think it'll get lonely when you reach that age 'coz you're no longer capable of doing fun stuff with your other half. It struck me as odd though when Tomoji Tanabe said in his interview that he doesn't want to die. I mean, can't he just be happy and content that he reached 113? There's not a lot of people who even reach 100 y/o. It's a fact though that Japan has one of the world's longest life expectancies, which is often attributed to the country's healthy diet rich in vegetables, fish and rice. Most of us eat rice a lot but not much people like to eat fish or veggies, me included. So I really don't expect to live that long. All I wanted though is to live my life to the fullest. I wanted to enjoy what I have now and cherish everything that God has given me. Because the truth is, we can never tell how long we live. Probably no matter how healthy your diet and lifestyle is. It's all just up to HIM.

Grilled Pineapple Chicken for Dinner

[raw chicken]
[ cooked chicken]

A couple of days back, Jeff and I tried a brand new recipe for dinner. We got it from a small chicken recipe cookbook sold in an antique shop in town. We feel kinda adjusted to our new routine since I started working. We no longer eat later than 8:00 P.M. We decided to prepare food that's easy to cook and something that's not gonna take much longer time to prepare. The food above is nothing fancy but it turned out great and delicious. Not to mention we grilled it which makes it all the more mouth watering. I'm still not an expert when it comes to cooking but at least I know of some good recipes now that I'm here in the U.S. Everytime I tried something new and liked it, I would always tell hubby that I'm going to try it when we go back to the Philippines so my family can see that I eventually learn how to cook. Like so many people, I didn't cook back then. It has always been mom or dad who does the cooking so I really struggled when I got here but with Jeff's help, my sister and of course the cookbooks that I used, every now and then, I've cooked decent meals for hubby and myself.

My New Laptop

Since I've started work, I have less free time to use the computer. The only free time I have is usually after work which is also Jeff's time to use the computer so we learn to take turns with the computer usage. But as you all know, blogging is time-consuming. There were times when hubby just fell asleep on the couch waiting for his turn. So we both decided to get me a laptop so we both can do things with the computer without having to wait on each other.
I love my new laptop. It is an HP Pavilion DV6000. We bought it last weekend at Best Buy. It has a 4GB RAM and it has a sleek design and shiny finish. It's so fast, definitely faster than our desktop and the best thing is that I can carry it with me anywhere in the house. Right now I usually camp on the couch in front of our tv so I can blog while watching my favorite Filipino shows. I enjoyed it so much. Yesterday, when I got tired from long hours of sitting, I even brought it to bed and watched My Bestfriend's Girlfriend over the internet. Convenient, eh! My internet experience has never been this fun.

Remembering my 1st Year in the U.S.

Looking back on the day when I arrived here in the U.S., I can only smile with the wonderful memories that my heart holds dear the most. Exactly a year ago, my sister, my brother-in-law John, nephew Bren and of course, my babe Jeff picked me up at Chicago O’hare Airport. I wasn’t on my best self physically on that day. I’m sure everyone who had flown for more than 20 long hours can relate to the crappy feeling that I've felt on that day. To make matters worse, I had a flu on the day of my flight and imagine my discomfort when I was flying that time. I was desperately in need of a very nice bed to lay down to and a very warm comforter to protect me from the numbing coldness. But of course, everything was worth it when I saw Jeff coming down from the escalator. I would never forget the unexplained sparkle in his eyes when we finally held each other at the airport after being separated for 9 long months from his last visit to the PI.

I'll have to say that my 1 year of staying in a foreign land had been a memorable journey. I'll be a hypocrite if I was gonna say that I didn't feel sad, lonely, depressed, and melancholic within the first 12 months that I was away from my family and country. I was just one of the millions of Filipinos all over the U.S. who misses their loved ones back home and still think that PI is a country like no other. But my husband makes things a little bit easier for me as far as my adjustments here are concerned. He has done countless ways to show me that my personal sacrifice of leaving everything back home just to be with him is not futile. He's definitely worth it and not even once did he fail to be very supportive with everything that I had to go through in relation to my being here. It wouldn't be this wonderful without him.

Some of the highlights of my first year in the U.S. are the travels that we made and of course our wedding. Our wedding might not be grand but it was the best thing that happened to us. Within a year, we've been to 5 states in the U.S. namely Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and a couple of times in Illinois. It wasn't really as much as a goal but it did make me feel happy and proud that within a year I did learn how to drive and got a driver's license, got approved with the immigration process and the best part was finding myself a good job. What else could I ask for? I feel so blessed and lucky that I have all these. I am so grateful to God for everything that He has provided for me. I definitely don't have the right to complain. It has been a year of blissful marriage, memorable journey, worldly blessings, happiness and contentment. It'll surely get better as years go by. I can't stop thanking Jeff for the steady love and support that he has given me on this journey of life that we both chose to live.

Bits and Pieces

I have just finished dropping 200 EC tonight. It was exhausting, addicting and fun. Before I'm going to turn over the PC to hubby, I was thinking of making a blog about some bits and pieces from yesterday. I was not at work yesterday. I attended the New Employee Orientation Seminar that took practically whole day. Like most seminars, 95% of the time I was confined in my seat inside the training room. My bottom literally hurt from sitting down for 8 long hours. Of course it was boring and I feel sleepy and tired. And the bad part is that I was assigned a seat in the front row. GREAT!!! I had to look attentive and alert most of the time but the truth is I was so bored and exhausted listening to the speakers talk about all kinds of insurance that was supposedly 'company benefits'. But I don't see why it's a benefit when they will still let us pay parts of it. Hehehe. Anyway, I only avail for the 401K. For medical and dental, I am already covered with Jeff's insurance so I'll be fine. The best part of the orientation though is the abundance of food at the back of the room. And the most helpful talk was from the owner/CEO of the bank, Mr. Gleason. It was an informal kind of interaction wherein he asked each of us (we were like 40 new employees from all branches) to introduce ourselves and tell the group what department we're working for. He also entertained questions and that's when he shared a bit of his secret for his success. It was so inspiring and I am truly amazed with his visions and beliefs for his company. He was only 25 y/o when he purchased the bank for 3.1 million dollars which he owed from a financing institution. From it's 2 small branches, the bank just continue to grow and now there's already 71 branches all over Arkansas, Texas and North Carolina. It was indeed a great feat!

On a different note, I was glad that one important requirement for our Philippine wedding has been taken care of yesterday. I was a little worried that we might not be able to secure a copy of Jeff's baptismal certificate 'coz aside from the fact that he didn't have any copy of it with him whatsoever, he was born and baptized in California. But thanks to my DIL, he was able to request a copy of it from the parish church in CA. It was fast and easy and I am again amazed of how organized some of the processes here in the U.S. I remember when I had to get my baptismal certificate at San Nicolas Parish as one of the papers that I prepared for immigration purposes, I had to go back to the church physically 3 times and spent a couple of weeks to get it done with. The fact that the spelling of my name in my Birth Certificate differs from my Baptismal Certificate makes it more difficult. I had to go to the Chancery Office and went through a lot of stuff for a name spelling change. Only to find out in the end that the church clerk still typed in the wrong name when I went back to claim it. Haay! Anyway, I'm rattling on. I had to end it here. My eyelids are now starting to droop. Earlier today I planned on going to bed early but as usual blogging and EC dropping prevent me from doing so.

Morning Thoughts

It's the start of another working week. I woke up early today and was glad to find one green opportunity waiting to be grabbed. It's been a while since I was serious with catching opps and I feel that today is a good sign for me. Anyway, I was a little upset with the allergies on my neck and right arm. I don't know what could have triggered this. I had this for a week already. I probably need to see a doctor about this. On a different note, in 30 minutes I'm going to shower for work. Today is Monday and I expect a lot of problems coming from our different branches but I just hope it wouldn't be as bad as last Friday. Anyway, I think I don't have time anymore to drop EC this morning so I'll just have to do it after work tonight. Haay, blogging!!!

My Work Haven

I am happy to share that last September 4th marked my 1st month of employment at the bank. After a month, there had been quite a number of good things that happened at work. I am enjoying my job so much right now. I'm still not a morning person though, so every morning waking up for work is still a drag, hehe, but I don't dread phone calls anymore. I may not be super computer geek but I've learned a lot about my job and bank operations. There's just so much to be thankful for. I feel lucky that I am here. I've got the nicest bosses ever. Our Chief Information Officer (CIO) is the type of guy who greets and make conversations even to just an ordinary staff like me whenever he sees you not just at the work premises. My immediate superior, our Information Systems Manager is the friendliest boss I've ever had. I remember on my 2nd week at work, he called and asked me to go to his office and initially I was anxious and scared that I might have screwed up at work. But he simply asked me my impressions so far with my new job, he needed to know if I started to enjoy it and if there's anything the department can do to help me enjoy my stay at work and told me that he has heard a lot of good things about me at work. That made me more serious in my craft and I'm so thankful that there are still bosses who takes time to acknowledge even simple things from their staff. My bosses doesn't act like they are hard to reach and deal with. They set a good example for our team. They are not the 'power-trip' kind of superiors. And I think that's the kind that deserve the most respect from their team.

Another thing that I liked about my workplace is it's proximity from our house and places to eat at lunch. I usually bring sandwich to work and eat it in our fully-equipped break room but during the times that I don't bring anything to eat, there's really nothing to worry about because a grocery store is just beside the building to the right, Sonic across the street and Dari-Delite (small local restaurant) beside the building to the left. Moreso, I have the option to eat lunch at home since it's just a 2-mile drive from work. Convenient, isn't it?

I'm going to share with you some photos of my workplace. It's not much but just to give you an idea of my everyday haven, I posted a few below. My apologies for the paper clutter...I'm just learning so much stuff so I had to write a whole lot of them and pinned it all over my workplace so it's easy for me to retrieve them.

My desk is full of important paper clutter, hehe (notes about work)

Notice the chocolates? Hehehe

My phone and headset

Some units that we were trying to run some test on

A male co-worker's clutter-free desk (He's comfortable using the E-files of our Handbook so he doesn't have any paper on his desk...Do I sound defensive? Hahaha!)

A view of our new building in construction

Our Christmas Family Tradition

Christmas might be too soon to blog about but just allow me to reminisce about my family and the way we celebrate this holiday. I happen to see pictures posted by my cousin on her Multiply and I thought about sharing it through my blog.

Last December of 2007 was my first Christmas away from home. I missed my family and the traditions on this season but the photos of them made me smile and remember how is it like to be there with them. Every year, we picked a color motiff for the Christmas Eve. My last December with them which was 2006, we wore something Orange. Hehehe. Kinda bold huh! Then on 2007, their color motiff was Red. Too bad I was no longer there but looking at their pictures made me happy. I so miss my family so much. I'm looking forward to seeing them again Christmas 2009. I wonder what would be our color motiff for that year?!?
